Clean Cars For New Hampshire

What's New

During the summer of 2008 we built up a team of volunteers and canvassers who spread the word and built public support for adoption the Clean Cars Program in New Hampshire. You might even have seen some of these folks in your own neighborhood or on a street in your downtown.

This summer our team:

  • Spoke with nearly 20,000 citizens across the state to raise the visibility of clean cars;
  • Collected over 4,000 petition signatures from supportive citizens; and
  • Organized community leaders, local official and businesses and generated media across the state.

All of this will help us build the public support it will take to pass the Clean Cars Program in New Hampshire in coming years, which will reduce global warming pollution from cars by an estimated 11 percent, and limit toxic air emissions as well.

How You Can Help

Unfortunately, car manufacturers and dealers are fighting harder than ever to prevent this change in favor of the status quo. Not only are they challenging clean cars laws in the states, but are leaning on the Bush administration as well to keep the clean cars program from going into effect. We know automakers will come back with the same tactics to hold back clean cars as they did before in New Hampshire. That’s why we need your help in calling on Gov. Lynch to step up and adopt Clean Cars in New Hampshire by this fall.

Help us launch our Clean Cars Campaign!

Background

We all have to do our part to solve global warming. But while the rest of New England is moving forward with programs that will put cleaner, greener cars on the road, New Hampshire is lagging behind.

And with global warming one of the most profound threats facing New Hampshire – leading to unpredictable weather patters, flooding, and increased levels of ground-level ozone – we need to act quickly to slow and eventually reverse this trend.

Transportation is New Hampshire’s second largest source of total global warming emissions – responsible for nearly 40 percent of the state’s emissions in 2004. And because there are more cars on the road and people are driving more, the problem is getting worse. Putting cleaner cars on the roads in New Hampshire is a critical first step toward cutting our global warming pollution.

Luckily, cleaner, more efficient vehicle technology is available that reduces global warming and air pollution emissions, while saving consumers money at the pump.

The Clean Cars Program sets strong standards for emissions of toxic air pollutants, promotes advanced-technology vehicles such as hybrids and electric cars, and establishes fleet-wide average limits on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming.

Cleaner cars are a win-win for New Hampshire. These vehicles reduce our dependence on foreign oil, save consumers money at the gas pump, and protect pristine wild places from oil and gas development.

Lynch to step up and support Clean Cars in New Hampshire this upcoming year.
