Environment New Hampshire Endorses Paul Hodes for New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District

Today, Environment New Hampshire endorsed Paul Hodes for the 2nd Congressional District, citing his commitment to clean energy and the environment.

“For too long, Congress has failed to enact clean energy policies that would help New Hampshire take advantage of our vast renewable energy resources. Hodes has the commitment to clean energy and the commitment to his district that is needed to build New Hampshire’s new energy economy and move America towards a new energy future,” said Erika Staaf, Advocate for Environment New Hampshire.

Rep. Hodes has consistently supported boosting investment and encouraging growth in the renewable energy sector. Hodes has also expressed a need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and remove the $13 billion in subsidies to oil and gas companies during this era of record profits.

In the past two years, Rep. Hodes has cosponsored legislation to raise fuel economy standards for vehicles and increase energy efficiency standards for appliances.  He has also supported establishing a Renewable Electricity Standard, a major step in shifting the country away from fossil fuels and instead toward clean energy sources such as wind, solar and clean biomass to meet our electricity needs.

“Hodes has consistently stood with the environmental community. He has campaigned for strong energy and global warming measures, and now is the time for the bold action and new solutions that Rep. Hodes brings to the table,” said Staaf.

His career so far has also produced a strong environmental voting record, scoring 100% in Environment New Hampshire’s 2008 scorecard.

Of Hodes’ opponents, none has a dependable commitment to the environment. All but one, who does not mention our current energy crisis at all, encourage drilling offshore and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge rather than investing all available resources into renewable energy sources to truly impact energy prices.  Further, none has demonstrated support for strong, science-based global warming legislation as a priority for the next Congress.

Environment New Hampshire has also endorsed Carol Shea-Porter for the 1st Congressional District, Jeanne Shaheen for U.S. Senate and Barack Obama for President. Environment New Hampshire’s federal organization, Environment America, has prepared a report on the environmental records of both presidential candidates, including their lifetime environmental voting records, which is available at http://www.environmentamerica.org/issues/election-2008.

“For real solutions to global warming and investment in New Hampshire’s vast renewable resources that we need to build a new energy future, Paul Hodes is hands down the best choice for the 2nd Congressional District,” said Staaf.
